The Inspector General of Police Mukhtar Touray has given directive to members of the Gambia Police Force (GPF) to crack down on vehicles plying the roads without license plates attached to it.
This directive was prompted by the failure to adhere to traffic rules by some drivers across the country.
During his recent deliberation on the issue, the IGP stated that there would be strict enforcement of this directive followed with the law taking its course.
“Any driver who wants to enjoy the comfort of your vehicle, without discomforting innocent children who are supposed to be transported to and from school, make sure your number plate is fixed,” he warned. “Failure to do so, your cars will be impounded and there will be heavy fines on the spot before you can get back your vehicle.”
In ensuring strict implementation of this directive, IGP Touray urged members of the Police Force to work in accordance with law and order.
“Our expectations as policing elements of this country are to be supported by order, especially members of the security fraternity, because usually on this particular matter, we are the very ones who abuse it,” Touray stressed.
Moreover, the IGP warns that removal of license or number plates by drivers on pretext would not be accepted any more, saying: “This will not be accepted any longer and timely instructions has been given to officers of the mobile traffic unit to ensure this directive from the Inspector General of Police is implemented to the letter.”
Concluding, he said that while mistakes are inevitable, officers who fail in due execution of their duties to save lives and properties “would relieve” themselves from duties.
