Gambia to host SAFRA 2025: URR delegation meets Youth and Sports Minister

The Gambia prepares to host the 32nd edition of the Week of Friendship and Fraternity in West Africa (SAFRA) in 2025.

The nation will host this august gathering under the theme: “Peace, Security, Social Inclusion, and Sustainable Cross-Border Development: What is SAFRA’s Contribution?”

As part of the national preparations, a delegation from the Upper River Region (URR), led by Governor Samba S. Bah, paid a courtesy visit to the Minister of Youth and Sports, Bakary Y. Badjie, on Wednesday to brief him on progress made ahead of the sub-regional event.

Governor Bah reaffirmed URR’s full readiness to welcome the sub-region to Basse, emphasizing that SAFRA 2025 will be a celebration of unity, culture, and cross-border cooperation.

Minister Badjie, in his remarks, praised the initiative and reiterated the government’s commitment to promoting youth development and regional integration. “SAFRA is more than a gathering, it symbolizes unity, peace, and mutual understanding among neighboring nations,” he said, pledging full institutional and technical support from the Ministry.

Also speaking, SAFRA Bureau Gambia President Abubacarr Krubally called for strong leadership from the Ministry to ensure The Gambia’s hosting leaves a lasting impact. Regional Youth and Sports Coordinator Musa Jarra echoed this sentiment, urging national mobilization for the success of the event.

Deputy Permanent Secretary for Technical, Musa Mbye, assured the delegation of the Ministry’s full cooperation, including logistical support and coordination.

SAFRA is a rotational convergence among six West African nations. These include The Gambia (Basse), Senegal (Tambacounda), Guinea Bissau (Gabu), Guinea Conakry (Boké), Mali (Kayes), and Mauritania (Selibaby). The weeklong event mostly focuses on sport, culture, trade, and youth engagement.

With over four decades of history, SAFRA continues to serve as a vital platform for regional friendship, cultural identity, and youth empowerment.

As Basse prepares to host, the URR delegation’s visit marks a key step in ensuring successful national coordination for SAFRA 2025.
