Gambia advances digital transformation with new financial partnership

The Ministry of Communications and Digital Economy, under the leadership of Minister Lamin Jabbi, on Friday hosted the official contract signing ceremony between Bibimoney UK, the Gambia Postal Services Corporation (GAMPOST), and Nifty ICT Solutions.

In his remarks, Minister Jabbi emphasised the government’s commitment to building a cashless digital economy, where all citizens can benefit from the right digital infrastructure and applications paving the way for inclusive financial services.

“This strategic partnership is a major step forward in promoting affordable and accessible financial and postal services, accelerating The Gambia’s digital transformation journey,” he said.

Telecommunications and Postal Services Director Serign Modou Bah, for his part, reaffirmed that the partnership aligns with the National Development Agenda, saying it will greatly improve nationwide service delivery and enable citizens to participate fully and benefit from the digital economy.

Nifty ICT Solutions CEO Jalamang Jobarteh thanked the Ministry for enabling a supportive environment for innovation. He noted the project’s transformative impact, especially for rural communities.

The first Deputy Governor of the Central Bank of The Gambia and Chairman of GAMPOST Board of Directors, Dr Abdoulie Sirreh Jallow, states that the mobile wallet partnership with GAMPOST will be transformational, as it has marked an important milestone in the digital transformation agenda of GAMPOST.

The traditional product of postal operators has been rendered obsolete by technological advancement compelling operators to diversify products as a sure way of remaining in business, he noted.

“In light of the above and as part of its product diversification program, I am pleased to state on behalf of the Board of GAMPOST, that this mobile wallet partnership initiative that the corporation is getting into with Bibimoney and Nifty will be transformational for the Corporation,” he said.

Mr Jallow assures that the financial benefits that will accrue GAMPOST will include access to technology as well as tech knowledge transfer through capacity building of its staff. GAMPOST and Nifty will learn about the technology in use and such technological knowledge acquired will be utilised to benefit both companies and the country at large.

Madam Ida Sarr from the British High Commission expressed strong support, calling the partnership a bold step towards expanding inclusive digital financial services and promoting economic resilience.

Shiraz Jessa, Founder and CEO of Bibimoney UK, highlighted the goal of reaching last-mile users and supporting The Gambia’s digital financial targets.

He introduced “Sutura”, saying it is a revolutionary interoperable mobile wallet that works on any phone, any network, with or without internet, and is interoperable and can integrate with any mobile money platform, bank and digital wallet, etc.

According to Mr Jessa, Sutura will also offer instant cross-border remittance services, reducing the cost of sending and receiving money, and enhancing trade opportunities across the country.

He indicated that the partnership reflects a shared vision to harness innovation for national progress, ensuring no one is left behind in the digital age.

“This initiative will be game-changer for the digital, postal and financial sector,” he noted, saying: “We will keep you posted as implementation starts immediately.”
