UDP protests against overseas ID cards issuance

United Democratic Party (UDP) members on Saturday marched against the government’s overseas issuance of national documents, condemning the process as a violation of the country’s laws.

The march, organised by the party’s youth wing, drew a large number of supporters, including both the young and the elderly.

Protesters held placards denouncing the process and used a loudspeaker mounted on a giant truck.

Haji Suwaneh, president of the UDP youth wing who led the march, condemned the issuance of diaspora ID cards, describing it as unlawful.

He called on the National Assembly to intervene and block the process, casting doubt on the credibility of Gambian documents internationally since President Barrow came to power.

“We believe this is a violation of the law,” Haji shouted into a microphone during the rally, referring to the government’s initiative to issue national documents to Gambians living abroad, commencing in Mauritania.

He said that despite raising their concerns formally with the immigration leadership and the Interior Minister, no positive response had been made.

Dodou Kassa Jatta, another UDP member, criticised the Barrow administration for failing to act in the best interest of The Gambia, vowing to resist any irregularities.

“We must defend our citizenship and we are ready to ensure we salvage our country from bad leadership,” he said.

Jatta also vowed they were ready to eject any non-Gambian found attempting to vote in the 2026 election.
