President Adama Barrow on Wednesday commissioned the newly constructed multi-complex administrative office of the Gambia Teachers’ Union Cooperative Credit Union (GTUCCU) in Bakoteh, marking a significant milestone in the Union’s nearly three decades of service.
The imposing structure, hailed as a symbol of growth and expansion, reflects the union’s steady rise since its establishment in 1996.
The inauguration attracted senior government officials, education stakeholders, and members of the Gambia Teachers’ Union, who described the project as a testament to GTUCCU’s vision and resilience.
Addressing the gathering, President Barrow praised the credit union for its pivotal role in improving the financial wellbeing of teachers. He commended the institution for extending its services beyond savings and loans to becoming a pillar of national development.
“GTUCCU has played a pivotal role in supporting the nation through targeted schemes, teacher and students rooms and financial literacy campaigns. GTUCCU has ensured that financial barriers do not impede teaching and learning,” said President Barrow.
Speakers at the ceremony included GTUCCU President Ismaila S. Ceesay, CEO Dawda Kujabi, and National Association of Co-Operative Credit Unions of The Gambia (NACCUG) General Manager Foday Sanyang. They underscored the significance of the new complex, emphasising that the facility is not only a befitting building but also a reflection of growth, stability and renewed commitment to serving teachers across the country.
“At GTUCCU our mission has always been clear: to provide financial sustainable solutions, empower our members and foster economic resilience within our communities,” GTU credit union’s CEO Dawda Kujabi stated, saying: “This new building is more than an administrative hub. It’s a symbol of accountability, efficiency and innovation in service delivery. It’s where ideas will continue to be nurtured, strategies developed and dream financed to thousands of Gambians. ”
Mr Kujabi further said the facility will strengthen service delivery, improve administrative efficiency and expand the Union’s capacity to meet the financial needs of its members.
The GTUCCU has grown into a financial backbone for educators nationwide, empowering members through savings, loans and other support schemes, he highlighted, saying the commissioning of the new office “signals a new chapter in its continued expansion and service” beyond the teaching fraternity.
