Gov’t allocates D30M to Victims Reparation Commission, pledges transparent process

The Government of The Gambia has allocated D30 million to the newly established Victims Reparation Commission (VRC) to advance justice for victims of past human rights violations, Attorney General and Minister of Justice Hon. Dawda A. Jallow announced on Wednesday, 10 September 2025.

Speaking during the Third Ordinary Session of the National Assembly’s 2025 Legislative Year, Minister Jallow revealed that D20 million is reserved for direct reparations, while D10 million is set aside for the Commission’s operations. Of this amount, the Ministry of Finance has already released D5.32 million for operational start-up and D17.5 million from the reparations fund.

The Attorney General clarified that although funds are available, payments to victims have not yet commenced. The Commission is currently finalizing its policies, strategies, and eligibility criteria to ensure a credible, transparent, and fair process.

Acknowledging the resilience of victims, the Ministry of Justice stressed that reparations cannot erase the harm endured but remain essential for recognition, justice and national healing.

The creation of the VRC marks a major step in implementing the Truth, Reconciliation and Reparation Commission (TRRC) recommendations, reinforcing government’s commitment to justice, reconciliation, and unity. The Ministry assured victims that funds will be managed with integrity, transparency and accountability, urging Gambians to view the process as a step towards peace and national cohesion.
