The Gambia has reaffirmed its unwavering commitment to upholding humanitarian principles and international law at the 151st Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) Assembly, currently underway in Geneva, Switzerland.
The Gambian delegation, led by Deputy Speaker of the National Assembly Hon. Seedy S.K. Njie, is actively participating in the global gathering, which brings together parliamentarians from across the world to deliberate on pressing international issues.
Addressing the Assembly on Thursday, Hon. Njie underscored The Gambia’s long-standing dedication to humanitarian values enshrined in its Constitution and reflected in both domestic action and international advocacy. He emphasised the crucial oversight role played by the National Assembly through its Standing Committees on Defence & Security and Human Rights & Constitutional Matters, which ensure that national security institutions operate in compliance with international humanitarian standards.
Citing The Gambia’s landmark case at the International Court of Justice (ICJ) on behalf of the persecuted Rohingya people, Hon. Njie reaffirmed the country’s firm stance against violations of international humanitarian law and its unwavering support for global accountability.
He urged the global parliamentary community to strengthen humanitarian architecture, prevent the politicization of aid, and uphold the impartiality of humanitarian action. Challenging the IPU to “act as the conscience of humanity,” he reminded delegates that protecting humanitarian norms is vital to preserving “the moral soul of the world itself.”
The 151st IPU Assembly, which commenced on Sunday, October 19, was held under the theme “Upholding Humanitarian Norms and Supporting Humanitarian Actions in Times of Crisis.” Established in 1889, the IPU serves as the world’s oldest and most inclusive parliamentary forum, fostering dialogue and cooperation among legislators to promote peace, democracy, and human rights.
The Gambian delegation also included Hon. Fatou Cham (Sanimentereng), Hon. Assan Touray (Bakau), Hon. Kebba Jallow (Jarra Central), and Hon. Musa Cham (Serrekunda).
