Kanifing Municipal Council (KMC) has inaugurated The Gambia’s first-ever tyre recycling plant, marking a historic milestone in the nation’s fight against waste and environmental pollution.
The groundbreaking facility, financed by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), is designed to convert discarded tyres into reusable materials, tackling one of the country’s most persistent waste management challenges.
For decades, abandoned tyres have clogged drainage systems, polluted neighbourhoods, and posed serious environmental hazards.
Speaking at the launch, KMC officials emphasised the council’s commitment to innovation, sustainability, and community development.
The project, they said, reflects the power of collaboration between local leadership and international partners in driving meaningful progress.

The recycling plant is expected to deliver wide-ranging benefits. Environmentally, it will reduce pollution and improve urban sanitation. Economically, it will create new opportunities by transforming waste into valuable resources, potentially spurring local industries and job creation.
“This initiative is more than just a recycling project; it is a symbol of our collective determination to build a cleaner, greener, and more resilient Gambia,” said a KMC representative.
The launch of the tyre recycling plant represents a turning point in the country’s sustainability journey, positioning Kanifing as a leader in environmental innovation and setting a precedent for future green projects nationwide.
