President Adama Barrow has officially inaugurated the newly completed Gunjur Cooperative Mosque, marking the end of a long journey that spanned more than a decade and involved multiple generations of community leaders, philanthropists, and religious figures.
The mosque project, first initiated in 2011 under the sponsorship of former President Yahya Jammeh and Alhagie Conteh of Dabanani Electrical Company, faced significant setbacks following Jammeh’s departure from office. However, the determination of the people of Gunjur and the intervention of Abdoulie Bojang, a native of Gunjur based in the United States, together with partners in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, revived the initiative. The late Oustas Ismaila Manjang, a renowned Islamic scholar, also played a pivotal role in advancing the project with support from his Saudi partners.
President Barrow’s D35 million donation provided the decisive boost that propelled the mosque to completion. The President personally visited the site on several occasions and contributed an additional D500,000 toward the inauguration ceremony.
The mosque’s completion is a testament to the collective perseverance of Gunjur’s leadership, from the late Alkalo Alhagie Sulayman Touray (Pandind Sulu) and his council of elders, to the late Alh Giki Darboe and his council, and now to the current Alkalo Dembo Darboe and his council members. The Imam Ratib of Gunjur, Sheikh Alh Muhammad Lamin Touray, who also served as President of the Supreme Islamic Council, spearheaded resource mobilization and secured major funding to ensure the project’s success.
The inauguration of the Gunjur Cooperative Mosque stands as a historic milestone for the community a symbol of faith, unity, and resilience. It is expected to serve as a spiritual and cultural hub for generations to come
