Opposition leader Ousainou Darboe has used the United Democratic Party’s (UDP) 30th anniversary celebration to underscore the party’s origins in The Gambia’s democratic struggle, while pledging continued commitment to youth empowerment and political cooperation.
Addressing supporters at the milestone event in Brikama, Darboe reflected on the turbulent political climate that gave rise to the UDP three decades ago. He said the party was established at a time when democratic institutions had been weakened and authoritarian rule had taken hold.
“UDP came at a time when our country was at a crossroads, when democracy was rigged, when our constitution was butchered, when one-man rule was installed,” Darboe declared.
The veteran politician drew parallels between the UDP’s formation and that of the People’s Progressive Party (PPP), noting that both emerged during periods of political uncertainty. He argued that the UDP’s history is inseparable from the broader struggle for democratic governance and constitutionalism in The Gambia.
Darboe also thanked party supporters for their role in sustaining the UDP over the years, describing the anniversary as not only a celebration of endurance but also a reaffirmation of the party’s mission.
He emphasised that the UDP’s vision extends beyond its founding moment, with a focus on empowering young Gambians and fostering cooperation across the political spectrum.
As the UDP marks three decades of existence, Darboe’s message sought to remind Gambians of the party’s roots in resistance and its ongoing role in shaping the country’s democratic journey.
