President Adama Barrow has appointed Sering Modou Njie as the new Minister of Foreign Affairs, International Cooperation and Gambians Abroad with immediate effect.
Minister Sering Modou Njie, a seasoned public servant and diplomat, previously served as Minister for Defence. He holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Political Science and a Master’s Degree in International Relations.
Minister Njie began his military career in 1989 and in 1998 served as Public Relations Officer of The Gambia Armed Forces and rose to become Head of the Republican National Guards in 2011.
He brings significant diplomatic experience to the Ministry, having served as Deputy Head of Mission at the Gambia High Commission in New Delhi, India. Minister Sering Modou Njie also served as Deputy Head of Mission at the Gambia Embassy in Ankara, Türkiye, from 2012 to 2020 when he was appointed Ambassador with the same mission until 2022.
However, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs has warmly welcomed Minister Njie in his new role and looks forward to his leadership in advancing The Gambia’s foreign policy objectives, strengthening international cooperation, and enhancing engagement with Gambians abroad.
The Ministry also takes this opportunity to express sincere appreciation to all partners and stakeholders for their continued collaboration and support.
Also, Joseph Colley of the Gambia’s Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) has been appointed New Chairman of the IEC.
Mr Colley succeeds Alieu Momar Njai, who retired six months ago.
The announcement follows President Adama Barrow’s consultation with the Judicial Service Commission and the Public Service Commission, as mandated by the 1997 Constitution.
Colley, previously the IEC Vice Chairman, brings a wealth of experience to the role. A seasoned administrator, he served as the Returning Officer during the historic 2016 Presidential Election, which marked a significant turning point in Gambian politics.
Colley’s leadership is expected to ensure transparency and integrity in upcoming elections. Sworn in on April 13, 2021, as Vice Chairman, Colley pledged to maintain a level playing field.
