CDS Cham hails UTG Debate Association effort in enhancing civil-military relations

The chief of defence staff Mamat O. Cham has earnestly commended the University of The Gambia Debate Association recognising that engagements which foster dialogue and healthy discussions strengthen civil-military relations.

CDS Cham made this statement at the weekend at receiving in audience a delegation from the UTGDA.

Civil-military relations refers to the relations between members of the civilian public and the armed forces. “While often contentious, as seen in many countries, it has the potential to be smooth and foster national unity and understanding through dialogue,” he said.

Understanding the essence of civil-military relations, the University of The Gambia offers it as a course under the political science department, and has been studied by thousands of young scholars over the years.

The courtesy visit formed part of the preparations for the nationwide tour of the UTGDA, which kicked off on 9 February 2025.

The young scholars and researchers were received by Lieutenant General Cham along with other GAF officials.

The UTGDA delegation highlighted its activities before the CDS and the work they have been doing over the years in fostering meaningful discussions on national matters. They also discussed the activities to be featured by the nationwide tour, whose significance cannot be overemphasised.

Meanwhile, on behalf of GAF and the military leadership, Lt General Cham assured of his institution’s support in any way it could, once again underscoring GAF’s understanding of the invaluable work of the UTGDA.
