Six Gambians among thirty-four young Africans are currently attending a seminar for young media professionals from Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) Countries at Zhejiang Normal University, in the famous historical and cultural city of Jinhua, China.
The seminar organized by the Zhejiang Normal University brought together young media professionals from six countries, including The Gambia, Zimbabwe, Egypt, Tanzania, Türkiye, and Uruguay.
The seminar commenced on October 31 and ends on November 13, 2025.
Participants were exposed to various perspectives on understanding China in history and the modern era, understanding the CPC’s mission and contributions, and Chinese modernization.
Speaking at the opening ceremony, Professor Zhu Yifeng, vice president of Zhejiang Normal University, revealed that the university is distinguished for its focus on teacher education.
He said that over the past 69 years since its establishment, the university has cultivated 400,000 professionals at various levels and in diverse fields, earning the reputation as the “Cradle of Basic Education Teachers in Zhejiang Province”.
He noted that the university has developed distinctive brands in educational research, African studies, and child studies, while establishing service advantages in areas such as high-end think tanks and smart education.
He advanced that this is a university of substantial strength, with 10 disciplines, that has consistently been listed among the top 100 universities in China for 15 consecutive years in terms of comprehensive strength, and is ranked 50th in China in the US News 2025 World University Rankings.
Speaking on behalf of the participants, Basma Sabry Mohamed said they expect to have a comprehensive and in-depth understanding of China’s dynamic media landscape, its innovative approaches to journalism and communication, and the way it integrates media, culture, and technology to support national development.
Through the lectures and field visits, “we look forward to learning how China’s media industry has evolved amid rapid digital transformation, especially in key areas such as media convergence, short video production, and the operation of media enterprises,” she said.
