Consumer Protection Commission edifies journalists on legal and policy frameworks

The Gambia Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (GCCPC) on Friday rallied journalists from major media outlets to expose them to its roles and functions, and to the necessary legal frameworks regulating competition in the business sector and protecting consumer rights.

Over fifteen journalists from broadcast, electronic and print media participate in the training, held at its head office in Kotu.

Not only did it expose them to the necessary legal and policy frameworks but it also familiarised them with the work of the GCCPC as a body tasked to ensure fair competition and protection of consumers from unfair practices.

The occasion was part of the GCCPC’s drive to raise awareness about its responsibilities and roles, as well as the activities it has been undertaking over the years.

Babucarr Ceesay, director of competition, delved into the functions of the GCCPC, making reference to the Competition Act and the Consumer Protection Act from which the GCCPC derive its mandate.

Harping on the centrality of the media in ensuring a Gambia shaped by fair competition in the business and corporate world, and where consumers’ rights are protected, Mr Ceesay said: “The media is an essential partner in our work. Many of the cases we handle come to our attention through journalists and social media platforms.”

He underscored that the training was crucial in strengthening GCCPC’s relations with the media to ensure the public is well-informed about competition policies and consumer rights.

Consumer protection manager Fabakary Touray also spoke on the same lines, hinting the timeliness of the edification session for the journalists.
