CPA chair urges Africa to raise voice in global affairs

Dr Christopher Kalila, Chairperson of the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association (CPA) Africa Region, has urged African nations to take a stronger role in global governance.

Dr Kalila made this call during the 54th Annual CPA Africa Conference held in Banjul, The Gambia, on today, 13 August 2025.

Speaking on the theme of African unity, democratic resilience and proactive leadership, Dr Kalila said: “It is time that our voice be heard as Africans.” He highlighted the continent’s growing influence in shaping international decisions.

He emphasised the importance of parliaments in holding governments accountable and promoting transparency, noting that the CPA helps make legislative processes more accessible and understandable to local communities.

Dr Kalila also addressed pressing issues facing African nations, including economic shocks and climate-induced droughts, calling for improved financial oversight and stronger support for vulnerable populations.

Highlighting youth empowerment as key to Africa’s future, he urged governments to provide platforms that enable young people to participate meaningfully in governance and development.

His address set the tone for the Banjul conference, which aims to drive inclusive, transparent and transformative progress across the continent.
