Darboe withdraws from UDP flagbearer race

Yankuba  Darboe, Chairman of the Brikama Area Council and a senior member of the opposition United Democratic Party (UDP), has announced he would not seek the party’s flagbearership for the 2026 presidential elections.

Chairman Darboe made the declaration following UDP leader Ousainou Darboe’s confirmation of his own candidacy for the party’s leadership position.

“My words are my bond!” Darboe stated emphatically. “I promised not to seek the UDP flagbearership if Lawyer Darboe is seeking it, and since Lawyer Darboe has announced that he will be seeking it, I wish to notify you all that I will not be applying for it.” His statement, shared publicly, underscores his commitment to unity within the UDP and respect for the party’s longstanding leader.

Yankuba Darboe’s decision is seen as a move to strengthen the UDP’s cohesion as it prepares for a critical election period in The Gambia.

However, Lawyer Ousainou Darboe, a prominent figure in Gambian politics, has led the UDP for decades, championing democratic reforms and challenging the ruling government. BAC Yanks Darboe’s choice to honour his pledge highlights the importance of trust and loyalty in Gambian politics, where personal commitments often shape political alliances.

As Chairman of the Brikama Area Council, Yanks Darboe has been a key figure in local governance, advocating for community development and accountability. His decision to step aside is likely to resonate with UDP supporters, reinforcing the party’s image of discipline and collective purpose. Political analysts suggest this move could bolster Lawyer Darboe’s campaign by eliminating internal competition, allowing the UDP to present a united front.
