The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has reaffirmed its commitment to supporting Ghana through two key initiatives aimed at promoting social protection and economic fairness.
In September 2025, ECOWAS facilitated national interventions in Accra addressing both gender-based violence (GBV) and the establishment of a competition and consumer protection framework.
From 15th to 18th September, the ECOWAS Gender Development Centre (EGDC), in collaboration with Ghana’s Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Welfare, organised a national workshop to prevent and respond to GBV and sexual harassment. The training brought together representatives from government ministries, civil society, security agencies, and the ECOWAS National Office. Participants strengthened their knowledge on the judicial, medical, and psychosocial care of GBV survivors, emphasising confidentiality and victim protection. The workshop concluded with the adoption of a national roadmap to promote tools and mechanisms for combating GBV and sexual harassment, reinforcing a call for zero tolerance towards such acts.
Earlier in the month, on 9 September, the ECOWAS Regional Competition Authority (ERCA) led by Executive Director Dr Simeon Konan Koffi, paid a courtesy visit to Ghana’s Minister for Trade, Agribusiness and Industry, Hon. Elizabeth Ofosu-Adjare. The discussions focused on ECOWAS’ support in helping Ghana develop and implement a comprehensive Competition and Consumer Protection Law.
Both initiatives reflect ECOWAS’ broader vision of fostering inclusive growth, social justice, and economic efficiency under its Vision 2050 framework – promoting a secure, equitable, and prosperous West Africa.
