GAF promotes 40 personnel to various ranks

The Gambia Armed Forces (GAF) on Friday, 23 May 2025, held a decoration ceremony for over 40 Officers at Defence Headquarters in Banjul.

The event, graced by the Minister of Defence, Brigadier General (Rtd) Serign Modou Njie, celebrated Officer Cadets, Junior and Senior Officers promoted to the ranks of Second Lieutenant, Lieutenant, Captain, Major, and Lieutenant Colonel.

The ceremony underscored GAF High Command’s commitment to rewarding excellence, hard work, and dedication across its ranks.

Delivering the keynote address, Minister Serign Momodou Njie expressed profound gratitude to the President and Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, His Excellency President Adama Barrow, for approving the promotions. He noted that the gesture reflects the President’s steadfast commitment to the welfare and professional growth of the armed forces and demonstrates his trust in their abilities.

The Minister also commended the Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), Lieutenant General Mamat OA Cham, and the entire GAF Command for their exemplary leadership, highlighting their role in strengthening the institution.

Minister Njie reminded the newly promoted Officers of the enormous responsibilities attached to their new ranks and urged them to uphold the Constitution and serve with integrity and dedication.

Major General, Mamat O. Cham, the Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) of GAF has echoed similar sentiments, praising the officers’ competence, discipline, and commitment to service. He thanked President Barrow for his continued support while acknowledging the significance of commissioning new Officer Cadets as a vital injection of leadership into GAF.

To the promoted Officers, he noted: “Your subordinates will look up to you for inspiration, guidance, and courage. Let your actions inspire confidence and pride among both your troops and the citizens you swore to protect.”

General Cham further praised the Promotional Exam (PROMEX) Board, chaired by Deputy CDS Major General Ousman Gomez, and the GAF Training School (GAFTS) for upholding high standards in military education. He also recognised the essential role of officers’ families in their success.

CDS Cham reaffirmed GAF’s commitment to ongoing reforms, including revisions to the Terms and Conditions of Service (TACOS), improved troop welfare, and modernization efforts. “We are building a professional, apolitical, and mission-ready force,” he affirmed.

The ceremony served not only to recognize exemplary service but also to boost morale among the newly promoted officers.

In attendance were the Honourable Minister of Petroleum, Deputy Speaker, National Security Adviser, General Officers, Senior and Junior Officers, senior retired Officers of the GAF and representatives of other security services.
