Gambia Media Fraternity Mourns Journalist Pa Barrow

Grieved by the untimely demise of sports journalist and news presenter, Pa Barrow, 39, the Gambia media fraternity has mourned the award-winning journalist who died at his residence in Fajikunda, Kanifing Municipality, in the early hours of Saturday, November 22, 2025.

He was laid to rest in his home village of Naini Sukuta on Saturday, November 22, 2025, in the evening.

The Gambia Press Union (GPU), in a statement, described Barrow’s death as shocking for many and is seen as a great loss to the media and the country, especially in the sports sector.

The Union stated that he has over a decade of journalism experience and has spent the last six years at AfriRadio, where a sports programme he co-hosted won a Television and Radio Award.

GPU President, Isatou Keita, in her own words: “Pa Barrow will be remembered as a brilliant sports journalist who has contributed a lot to sports development in the Gambia, especially grassroots sports.

Colleagues said his energetic nature and passion for journalism enable him to work with various media outlets like West Coast Radio, The Alkamba Times, and AfriRadio.

Pa Barrow also served as media officer at KM Regional Football Association, Hawks Football Club, Gambia Amputee Football Team, and North Star Football Academy.

He was the 2021 Sports Reporter of the Year in the GPU National Journalism Awards  (GPU Awards -Excellence In Journalism).

One of his closest colleagues, Lamin Del Fadera, was quoted as describing him as “calm, disciplined, and humble.”

For the Sports Journalists’ Association of The Gambia (SJAG), Barrow’s death leaves a deep void in The Gambia’s sports community, where his voice, enthusiasm, and presence will be greatly missed.

Following the news of Pa’s death, Omar Jarju, President of SJAG, said Pa was more than just a colleague and friend, adding that his demise is a significant loss for Gambian sports journalism.

In addition to his dedication, humility, professionalism, and unwavering passion for sports journalism, SJAG noted that he will be remembered by young journalists as a mentor, a vibrant storyteller, and a pillar within the media landscape.
