Gambia Navy concludes three-month training for 45 oyster women on swimming and safety

Gambia Navy, in collaboration with Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), concluded a 3-month training programme for two cohorts of 45 women oyster farmers on swimming and sea survival in a ceremony held at Lamin Lodge Riverside today, 24 April 2025.

The project, dubbed FISH4ACP, implemented by FAO, was funded by the EU and German government for Women Oyster Farmers in The Gambia. The training was centered on swimming proficiency and water safety to empower oyster industry workers to operate safely and efficiently, thereby boosting productivity and resilience.

FAO representative in The Gambia, Moshibuhi Rampedi, commended the initiative, emphasizing its contribution to sustainable livelihoods and occupational safety for women in the fisheries sector. 

Amat Tijan Jobe, an official from the Ministry of Fisheries, praised the Navy’s dedication and highlighted the government’s commitment to empowering women in the fisheries sector. 

The CEO Try Oyster Women Association Fatou Janha Mboob also commended the Navy’s professionalism and emphasised the importance of the training. 

Evon Sambou, a participant expressed gratitude to the organisers and instructors. She said the training would enhance safety and productivity in the oyster industry.

Sambou further posited that the initiative demonstrates the Navy’s commitment to community safety and skill development.

The event concluded with presentation of certificates to the participants.
