The Gambia Police Force has taken a historic step as its first batch of officers prepares to serve on United Nations peacekeeping missions abroad.
After three weeks of intensive training, the officers are now set to join global efforts in promoting peace and security.
The training, held from 4 to 25 August and coordinated by the Peace Support Office, focused on practical knowledge and field skills guided by UN Core and Specialized Training Materials. It was designed to prepare officers not just for the technical demands of deployment, but also for the responsibility of representing The Gambia on the international stage.
Speaking at the opening of the program, Officer Commanding the Peace Support Office, CSP Jerreh Sambou, highlighted the importance of the mission. “This training is not just about learning procedures, it is about carrying the values of peace, respect, and service wherever you go,” he told participants.
For the officers, the training also came with a reminder of what will be expected of them in the field. ACP Lamin Manka, Commandant of the Police Training School, called on participants to uphold discipline, professionalism, and respect. “You are ambassadors of your country. The world will judge The Gambia by your conduct,” he emphasized.
Closing the training, Commissioner of the International Affairs Unit, Famara Jobarteh, praised the dedication shown by both trainers and participants. He expressed confidence that the officers will rise to the challenge. “This is the beginning of a new chapter for the Gambia Police Force. I am certain you will make us proud as you take on this noble task,” he said.
The successful completion of this program marks a milestone for The Gambia, reflecting the country’s growing role in global peacekeeping.
