Members of the Coalition of Progressive Gambians (CoPG) yesterday voiced their stance that the 60th anniversary of Gambia’s independence should be paired with the introduction of a new constitution that truly reflects the hopes and needs of the Gambian people.
This message was shared yesterday to the media during their independence celebration deliberation.
As discussions around changing the country’s constitution continue, the CoPG members emphasised that it would be more meaningful to celebrate independence alongside a new constitutional framework, which is the draft constitution from 2020, suggesting it could be a strong basis for celebration.
They expressed concern that celebrating such a significant milestone, considered a “diamond jubilee”, leaves a lot to be desired when the country faces many challenges.
“These include high levels of debt, rising prices, poor living conditions, insecurity, political instability, and issues like corruption and favouritism,” they cite.
Moreover, Celestine Kujabi, a member of the CoPG, explained that the celebration should align with the establishment of a stronger democracy.
“Gambia is yet to fully achieve democratic principles, and things need to be improved for the country to truly mark this milestone as a new beginning,” he emphasised.
Mr Kujabi further highlighted the need for truly independent institutions, such as the police and the electoral commission, to ensure a healthy democracy.
Meanwhile, Seedy Cham voiced his disappointment, saying he has little to celebrate because the country is increasingly reliant on imported goods, raising doubt about Gambia’s independence.
The CoPG members concluded that the independence celebration should reflect the progress, achievements, and developments of the nation for it to be meaningful.
