The Government of The Gambia, in collaboration with its development partners such as the World Bank, European Union and European Investment Bank, is set to inaugurate a mega infrastructure project aimed at modernizing the country’s energy sector.
The inauguration of the high voltage infrastructure flagship project of the National Water and Electricity Company, under the Gambia Electricity Restoration and Modernization Project (GERMP), is scheduled for 20 February 2025.
The event is projected to mark as a paradigm shift in The Gambia’s drive towards improved and modernised energy sector.
According to a joint dispatch by the Government of The Gambia, NAWEC and other partners, the modern Transmission and Distribution (T&D) infrastructure, including the National Control Center to be inaugurated, would reduce the frequent power cuts and low voltage issues by stabilising the flow of electricity from the primary substations.
Moreover, the dispatch added, these transmission and distribution systems within the Greater Banjul Area would enhance NAWEC’s capacity to provide stable power supply to homes and businesses and other institutions within the country.
This development is expected to greatly enhance NAWEC’s ability to provide reliable electricity to homes and businesses across the Greater Banjul Area (GBA) and beyond.
The historic occasion will be graced by President Adama Barrow, government officials, development partners including World Bank Group, European Union, and European Investment Bank, and invited guests.
