Gambian transport officials enhance skills in urban transport systems

The Ministry of Transport, Works, and Infrastructure (MoTWI) and key sectoral staff have successfully completed a two-week intensive training program on Urban Transport Development and Construction.

The training, conducted at the prestigious Beijing Jiaotong University in the People’s Republic of China, was part of a global development initiative aimed at equipping participants with cutting-edge knowledge and skills in designing, planning, and management of urban transport systems.

“This expertise is crucial for addressing the growing challenges of urban mobility, congestion, and sustainability in Gambian cities,” said Principal Transport Regulatory Officer Saikou Kujabi.

The training underscores the strong bilateral cooperation between The Gambia and China in the realm of transportation and infrastructure development, Mr Kujabi said, adding that by enhancing the technical capabilities of its staff, MoTWI is poised to make significant strides in improving the country’s transportation infrastructure, aligning with national development goals and enhancing the quality of life for Gambians.

He thanked the People’s Republic of China for funding the capacity building program, saying: “The successful completion of this training program is a testament to the commitment of both the Gambian government and the Chinese government to foster development through capacity building and knowledge sharing.”

He emphasised that the skills and insights gained from the training will be instrumental in shaping the future of urban transport in The Gambia, as it contributes to more efficient, safe and sustainable transportation systems.
