German Police Support project phases out in Gambia

The German Police Support Team (GPST) project in The Gambia officially came to a successful conclusion today February 5, 2025, with a handing over and closing ceremony held at the Police Intervention Unit Headquarters in Kanifing.

The event, attended by high-ranking officials, diplomats, and security stakeholders, marked the end of a transformative partnership that has significantly contributed to police reform and capacity building within the Gambia Police Force.

Assistant Inspector General of Police Ebrima Bah opened the ceremony, welcoming guests and emphasizing the impact of the GPST project on strengthening democratic policing and institutional capacity.

Sebastian Eisenhardt, Head of Project GPST, highlighted key milestones achieved since the project’s inception in 2018, including training programs, logistical support, and infrastructure development, all aimed at modernizing the GPF.

Inspector General of Police Seedy Mukhtar Touray, in his remarks, expressed gratitude to the German Government, the European Union, and GPST trainers for their unwavering support. He emphasised that while the project was concluding, its impact would be long-lasting, shaping the future of law enforcement in The Gambia.

German Ambassador to The Gambia, H.E. Klaus Botzet, reaffirmed Germany’s commitment to supporting security sector reforms and acknowledged the dedication of Gambian police officers in adopting international best practices.

Representing the Ministry of Interior, Permanent Secretary Assan Tangara commended the GPST initiative for its role in improving police operations and ensuring safer communities.

A symbolic handover of €210,000 worth of equipment and items, including two vehicles, was conducted between the German Ambassador and the IGP, followed by an inspection of donated items, reinforcing Germany’s continued commitment to security development.

“As the GPST project officially comes to a close, the Gambia Police Force remains committed to sustaining the progress achieved, leveraging the skills and resources gained to further enhance policing and public safety,” he said. However, the event marks not just the end of a project but the beginning of a stronger, more professional and service-oriented police force in The Gambia.
