The construction of the Giboro-Faraba Sutu 13-kilometer road has officially commenced on a positive note, marked by a community engagement meeting organised by Societe Malienne De Genie Civil (SOMAGEC) on Saturday 9 August at Giboro community Bantaba.
The event brought together local leaders, community members, and stakeholders to celebrate the beginning of a project that promises to enhance connectivity and spur economic growth in the region.
Transport, Works and Infrastructure Minister Ebrima Sillah emphasised the importance of the road. “These roads are designed to connect communities and ease the movement of people. I am confident that once this road is completed, those who have been hesitant will join President Adama Barrow in supporting this national development.”
Minister Sillah urged the contractor to prioritize hiring local residents, thereby creating employment opportunities for the community. He expressed optimism about the project’s potential to transform the region, saying: “Kombo East has always been at the forefront of supporting the President, and we have never regretted our decision.”
The Minister also called on the community to support the contractor in their efforts to complete the project on time. “I challenge the naysayers who doubt this road will become a reality to reconsider their stance,” he said, reinforcing government’s commitment to the project.
Alkalo Sherifo Jatta echoed Sillah’s sentiments, expressing gratitude for the government’s commitment to development. “What we have been looking for from the government is finally here,” he remarked. “Anyone who contributes to this project has done more than enough for us as a people.”
He recalled the skepticism surrounding the project when the foundation stone was laid, saying: “Many doubted, but it is now clear that this project is a reality.”
Jatta also cautioned the community to be wary of deceptive promises from those who may seek to undermine the project. “We have witnessed unprecedented road infrastructure development in the past four years, and Kombo East is committed to ensuring that our grandchildren benefit from these improvements,” he concluded.
Other speakers, including Aja Iso Jatta representing the women’s group, and the chief of Kombo East, echoed similar sentiments.
As the Giboro-Faraba Sutu road construction project moves on, the community remain hopeful and engaged, ready to support the initiative that promises to enhance their quality of life and foster economic opportunities in the region.
