GPF prosecutes driver in Abuko School drifting incident

The Gambia Police Force has taken swift legal action in connection with the recent car drifting incident that occurred at Abuko School, which tragically left a student seriously injured.

The driver, Malick Badjie, was charged with one count of reckless and negligent act contrary to Section 190 of the Criminal Offence Act 2025, after recklessly drifting his vehicle within a school zone and striking a Grade 9 student, Abdourahman Bah, who sustained critical injuries.

Although Abdourahman’s legs were not amputated, he underwent surgery and is currently responding to treatment at the hospital.

Malick Badjie was arraigned on July 22, 2025, before Magistrate Dibba at the Bundung Magistrates’ Court, where he pleaded guilty to the charge.

The police prosecutor presented the facts of the case, and the court adjourned the matter till today Thursday, July 24, 2025, for the presentation of the victim’s medical report and sentencing.

The accused has been remanded at Mile 2 Central Prisons pending the next courthearing.

However, The Gambia Police Force reiterates its zero-tolerance stance on reckless driving, particularly the dangerous practice of car drifting. Such acts pose grave risks to lives and public safety, and the GPF “remains resolute in ensuring that offenders face the full weight of the law”.
