The Gambia Police Force has joined sister security agencies together with students and individuals to participate in the First Edition of the Law Enforcement Torch Run (LETR), organised by Special Olympics Gambia on February 14, 2025.
The event began with the symbolic lighting of the torch by Her Excellency the First Lady, Madam Fatoumata Bah Barrow, followed by a march-past, led by the Police Band’s melodious tunes.
However, the procession, featuring senior and junior law enforcement officers, students, and individuals with disabilities, made its way from the National Assembly to McCarthy Square, with the First Lady, Minister of Youth and Sports Hon. Bakary Badjie, Inspector General of Police Seedy Mukhtar Touray, Director General of Immigration Ebrima Mboob, and Director of Gambia Prison Service Ansumana Manneh leading the way.
As a global initiative, the Law Enforcement Torch Run represents law enforcement’s commitment to inclusion, unity and support for Special Olympics athletes with intellectual disabilities.
Traditionally, law enforcement officers carry the torch through the community, symbolizing the “flame of hope” and solidarity with these athletes.
Speaking at the opening ceremony, Hon. Bakary Y. Badjie, Minister of Youth and Sports, commended Special Olympics Gambia for organizing a “meaningful event” and reaffirmed his ministry’s dedication to supporting sport.
He emphasised the importance of inclusive sport in empowering young people.
The symbolic torch was then handed over to the Minister of Public Service, Baboucarr Boye, who expressed gratitude to Special Olympics Gambia for recognizing the government’s role in supporting sport.
He further reaffirmed government’s commitment to the development of athletics and inclusivity.
The event culminated in a historic moment as the torch was passed to His Excellency, President Adama Barrow, marking The Gambia’s dedication to fostering inclusivity and strengthening support for Special Olympics athletes.
The landmark event highlights the collaboration between law enforcement, government, and the community, reinforcing the message of acceptance, empowerment and unity through sport.
