Lawyer LJ Darboe declares to run for presidency in 2026 elections

Lawyer Lamin J. Darboe has announced his intention to run for the presidency in the 2026 presidential elections.

It is however worth noting that he previously sought the UDP’s flag-bearer position but faced challenges due to dual citizenship requirements.

Mr Darboe’s announcement came on Friday 3 October 2025, during his interview with the local media.

Darboe has expressed his willingness to renounce his British citizenship if elected president, emphasizing his preparedness to lead the country. He claims to have the credentials, education, experience, and background to take The Gambia to the next level.

Lawyer LJ Darboe was initially a member of the United Democratic Party (UDP). He resigned from the party citing lack of transparency and internal reform issues. He faced hurdles in the UDP flag-bearer selection process due to dual citizenship requirements.

He thus declared his intention to run for the presidency, emphasizing his qualifications and vision for a transparent and accountable government.
