The Ministry of Gender, Children, and Social Welfare (MoGCSW) has concluded a two-day National Women’s Council meeting in Brikama, West Coast Region. The occasion marked the second statutory quarterly meeting of the 17th National Women’s Council.
During the meeting, women councillors received training on their roles and responsibilities, the mandate of the Ministry, and its key programmes and initiatives.
Discussions covered various policies, programmes and their implementation, including child protection, sexual and gender-based violence, entrepreneurship, climate change and horticulture.
One of the notable issues raised was the use of ‘taba’ (snuff), which was strongly discouraged. Council members agreed in principle that any member using or selling taba as a source of income should desist, or face possible action.
The councillors also explored ways to address challenges affecting the lives and livelihoods of women in their communities. Representing all districts across The Gambia, their core objective is to stand for their respective communities regardless of political affiliation and to support ongoing women’s empowerment initiatives.
Speaking at the opening, Minister of Gender, Children and Social Welfare, Fatou Kinteh, welcomed members and stressed the importance of the quarterly statutory meeting, which brings together women from all parts of the country.
She noted that the meeting fosters collaboration towards achieving the national development agenda, as outlined in the Green Recovery National Development Plan.
The primary goal, she said, was to review ongoing initiatives by council members and the Ministry to advance the social and economic development of women.
Hon. Kinteh urged councillors to be proactive in creating opportunities and exploring new business ventures, emphasising their vital role in contributing to national development. She also highlighted the need for mutual support, encouraging the women to collaborate and uplift one another in their entrepreneurial endeavours for a better Gambia.
The minister assured the council of the government’s unwavering support under the leadership of President Adama Barrow, who is committed to uplifting and empowering all Gambian women.
The Chairperson of the Women’s Council, Ramata Giggo, who also serves as the Director of Horticulture at the Ministry of Agriculture, was present at the event.
As part of the programme, Minister Kinteh led councillors to visit Assie’s Factory, a women-led business in Brikama producing vinegar, bleach, and liquid soap. The owner explained that she sources raw materials from Nigeria and Senegal. The minister commended her dedication to empowering women economically, assuring her both of her personal support and of the government.
“We want to support local talents,” she said. “I use your products; they are of high quality, and I encourage people to patronise your business. I brought the women here so they can see your work.”
The National Women’s Council is made up of both elected and nominated members, representing interfaith bodies (Christian and Muslim councils) as well as various sectors including education, civil society, health, the judiciary, and entrepreneurs.
