NPP deputy spokesperson responds to UDP claim on diaspora ID card issuance

Seedy S.K. Njie, Deputy Speaker of the National Assembly, has responded to the United Democratic Party (UDP) for opposing the government’s decision to issue national documents to Gambians living abroad.

Mr Njie, who doubles as deputy spokesperson for the ruling National People’s Party (NPP), made the remarks after the UDP youth wing staged a massive protest march denouncing the process and calling for its immediate halt, which they believe undermines Gambian laws.

Addressing a football event in rural Gambia, where the ruling party, under the leadership of President Adama Barrow, donated football jerseys, balls, 40,000 dalasis, and cooking utensils, a gesture widely condemned as political manipulation, Njie praised Barrow’s government as the solution for The Gambia.

“I want to tell Gambians that the National People’s Party is a peaceful and development-oriented party, as opposed to those who insult, are violent and ridicule others.

“And 2026 will be a defining moment in Gambian political history, a moment when Gambians will choose between hope, development, progress, peace, and those who insult, belittle, and ridicule people,” Njie said, without mentioning names.

Amid loud cheering, Njie continued his response to the UDP, which staged a protest against the government’s decision to issue national documents to Gambians abroad.

He said the Barrow government believes in equal rights and justice for all Gambians, and that Gambians living abroad also have the right to be issued national documents.

“We believe Gambians abroad have the same rights as Gambians at home to be issued national documents,” he said, defending the process.

“We have heard that the UDP is protesting against overseas ID card issuance. That shows that the National People’s Party is the solution for this country,” he added.
