Parliament approves landmark Students Revolving Loan Scheme Bill

In a historic move to make higher education more accessible to Gambian students, the National Assembly on July 11, 2025, passed the much-anticipated Students Revolving Loan Scheme Bill, 2025.

The bill, tabled by the Ministry of Higher Education, Research, Science and Technology (MoHERST), is widely seen as a significant step towards breaking financial barriers that have long limited access to tertiary and higher education in The Gambia.

Under the leadership of President Adama Barrow, the new law aims to promote inclusive education and national development by providing financial support to students across the country.

The Students Revolving Loan Scheme will enable eligible students to finance their studies and training programmes, helping to cover tuition and related fees at accredited post-secondary, tertiary, and higher education institutions.

In addition to tuition support, the Scheme will also provide funding for academic research and learning programmes within registered institutions and accredited programmes throughout The Gambia.

Officials from the Ministry described the bill’s passage as a reaffirmation of the government’s commitment to expanding educational opportunities and investing in the future of Gambian youth. The initiative is also aligned with the national ideals enshrined in the Constitution of The Gambia.

The Students Revolving Loan Scheme is expected to play a vital role in strengthening the national education system, supporting human capital development, and contributing to the country’s socio-economic growth.

Further details regarding the application process, eligibility criteria, and loan repayment terms are expected to be announced by the Ministry a later date.
