The Gambia Police Force (GPF) has invited Lawyer Borry S. Touray of the United Democratic Party (UDP) for questioning and detained him at the police headquarters, sources told SeniGambia.
According to a statement issued today by the Police, GPF invited Borry to the Police Headquarters over a statement constituting incitement to violence.
Police to the public
“The Gambia Police Force hereby informs the public that Mr. Borry S. Touray was on Thursday, December 4, 2025, invited to the Police Headquarters in Banjul, where he was confronted with statements he made that constitute incitement to violence,” the police stated.
The engagement forms part of an active police inquiry into remarks considered capable of provoking unrest or undermining public safety.”
It noted that the GPF emphasizes that incitement to violence is a serious offence under the laws of The Gambia, and such conduct will be addressed with the full force of the law.
“Accordingly, he has been charged with ‘Incitement to Violence’ under Section 58 of the Criminal Offences Act, 2025,” the police dispatch said, adding that further updates will be provided.
Rights Centre condemns ‘incendiary comments’
However, Edward Francis Small Centre for Rights and Justice (EFSCRJ) condemned what it described as incendiary comments by UDP’s Borry S Touray.
The Centre expressed deep concern and strongly condemned the recent remarks made by Mr. Borry S. Touray, the UDP Administrative Secretary for Legal Affairs, during a political meeting in Jambur.
“Speaking in Mandinka, Mr. Touray made a metaphorical reference to the mother of the President in his call for removing President Barrow from office and went further to invoke violence, identity-based claims of legitimacy, and confrontational rhetoric.”
The rights group quoted Mr. Touray saying: “It should be worth to engage in violence and sacrifice our lives just to ensure Barrow does not seek a third term… we are not ruling out anything.” among other comments described as unacceptable in a multiparty democracy.”
EFSCRJ called on Mr. Borry S. Touray to withdraw the statements and to be held accountable by UDP for these remarks.
EFSCRJ challenged the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC), the Inter-Party Committee (IPC), civil society, media, citizens, political parties, and the IGP to fulfill their respective roles.
Dangerous speech alert
Malagen, an investigative media outlet and fact checker, flagged UDP National Executive for an inflammatory statement in its Dangerous Speech Alert.
Charges termed frivolous
Yankuba Darboe, Chairman of Brikama Area Council (BAC), said to deny Senior Counsel Borry Touray bail and detain him for the frivolous charges preferred against him is nothing more than a blatant abuse of Police Powers, which we must condemn and oppose at all costs.
“Let’s meet at Police Headquarters tomorrow morning in Banjul to demand the release of our patriot legal counsel, Borry S. Touray! No to Police Brutality and NO BARROW 3RD TERM,” he stated on his Facebook page, calling on all UDP MPs to boycott tomorrow’s budget speech at Parliament and join them at Police Headquarters.
At the time of publishing, efforts to reach the Police Public Relations Officer (PRO) proved futile, but sources said Borry S. Touray is still with the police as he was denied bail.
