The Gambia’s President Adama Barrow on Thursday delivered the 2026 State of the Nation Address (SoNA) at the National Assembly, outlining his administration’s progress and addressing the current challenges facing the country.
The annual address is a constitutional requirement under Section 77(1) of the 1997 Constitution and is supported by Order 24(1) of the Standing Orders of the National Assembly. It serves as a vital report to the nation on the general state of public affairs, government policy, and national priorities.
During his speech, President Barrow highlighted advancements in several critical sectors, including infrastructure, education, healthcare, security, and the economy. He detailed the strategic investments and ongoing reforms intended to improve the livelihoods of Gambians and ensure sustainable development across the country.
The President also placed a strong emphasis on the principles of good governance, accountability, and transparency. He reaffirmed government’s commitment to the equitable and responsible management of national resources.
Looking towards the future, the Head of State expressed optimism regarding the country’s trajectory. He noted that strategic partnerships and structural reforms are expected to generate new opportunities, particularly for women and the youth.
In accordance with parliamentary procedure, the motion for the consideration and debate of the President’s Address has been adjourned.
The National Assembly will reconvene on Monday, 30 March 2026, to start the debate, allowing Honourable Members time to scrutinise the statement.
The Vice President and Cabinet Ministers are required to be present during these sessions to engage with the Assembly on matters raised in connection with the address.
