The leader and the secretary general of the United Democratic Party (UDP), Lawyer Ousainu Darboe, has said the party’s process of selecting a presidential flagbearer is a reflection of its commitment to democracy.
In his engagement with the media, Darboe expressed gratitude to supporters and underscored the importance of adhering to democratic principles as the UDP prepares for the next presidential election.
According to him, the party invited interested candidates to submit their applications by September 2.
“This process is a validation of our belief,” Darboe said. “It’s a validation of the fact that the United Democratic Party values doing things democratically, and every member who fulfills the requirements established by the constitution has a right to apply to be selected as flagbearer.”
The veteran politician advised his members to show respect to all applicants and to avoid criticism of those seeking to lead the party into the election.
He called on supporters that each candidate is motivated by service to the country.
“All those who have applied have The Gambia at heart,” he said. “Each of us is offering ourselves to be of service to our country. No one should be condemned for having applied to be a presidential candidate,” he advised.
On the possibility of coalition-formation, Darboe signalled openness to working with groups seeking to unseat current President Adama Barrow. “Gambians love me not because of who I am, but the principle upon which I stand, which is uprightness,” he said.
The UDP leader and secretary general appealed to party supporters to avoid insults and divisions, stressing the need for unity and cohesion as the party moves forward.
When pressed on whether he had submitted his own application or would support another candidate, Darboe declined to give a direct answer. “I don’t think I want to limit myself by answering that question,” he said. “I don’t think it’s worth faking what I believe in.”
The country’s largest opposition party is expected to announce its flagbearer come September 10, 2025, after reviewing all applications from interested applicants.
