UNICEF Gambia Celebrates Diamond Jubilee

The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) The Gambia has Monday, November 18, 2025 celebrated 60 years in The Gambia as it continuously endeavour to champion children’s issues in the country.

In an event held at the Sir Dawda Kairaba Jawara International Conference Centre in Bijilo, the UN agency brought together key stakeholders from the government, private sector, and others under the larger UN family.

As chief guest of honour, Vice President Mohammed B.S. Jallow of The Gambia commended UNICEF’s six decades of relentless dedication, recognising its impact through partnership with Government.

“Sixty years ago, as The Gambia began its journey as an independent nation, UNICEF embarked on this journey alongside us. This is not merely a relationship; it is a diamond partnership forged in a shared vision and cemented by consistent action,” he said.

On behalf of President Barrow, the state and its people, the VP Jallow recognised UNICEF’s enduring presence, steady commitment, and contributions to the development of many generations of our population.

Minister of Gender, Children, and Social Welfare, Madame Fatou Kinteh, said she witnessed firsthand the interventions of UNICEF.

UN Resident Coordinator, Mr. Karl Frédeérick Paul stated that as they commemorate 60 years of UNICEF in The Gambia and 80 years of UN globally, the gathering was not merely to celebrate history but to renew their covenant with the future.

Mr. Paul saluted UNICEF for the remarkable milestone achievement in the country over the past six decades.

UNICEF West and Central Africa deputy representative, Madam Ramou Ndure, who was born and raised in The Gambia, where she also began her UNICEF professional journey, described the occasion as a deeply personal moment.

The Speaker of the Children’s National Assembly, Babacarr Sowe, called for the inclusion of children in the decision-making process. They must not be seen only as beneficiaries but as stakeholders, he maintained.

Meanwhile, Ms. Nafisa Binte Shafique, Country Representative UNICEF Gambia, acknowledged the commitment and support by their stakeholders over the years.
