US citizen fined D120,000 or serve ten years in prison

The Prosecution Unit of The Gambia Police Force has secured the conviction of Rickey Usumbura, a US citizen, who was sentenced to a fine of D120,000 or serve 10 years in prison for possessing an unlicensed firearm and ammunition.

According to the report from the Gambia Police Force (GPF), Usumbura, 61, pleaded guilty after narcotics agents, during a January 14 patrol in Siffoe, arrested his son for cannabis possession.

“However, a search of his residence led to the discovery of a Brazilian-made Taurus pistol, two magazines, and 82 live rounds of ammunition,” the report added.

The report indicated that ballistic test conducted by the Gambia Armed Forces confirmed the findings, which were submitted as evidence in court.

The GPF warns against illegal firearm possession, emphasising that “offenders will face strict legal consequences”.
