UTG Edu Students Association discusses nutrition issues with NaNA

The executive members of the Education Students Association at the University of The Gambia have had edifying discussion on nutrition matters with the National Nutrition Agency (NaNA).

The two bodies, who met on Thursday at the NaNA headquarters in Bakau, discussed ways to work together on programmes that aim to improve nutrition, particularly for babies and nursing mothers. The discussion also included capacity-building training for education students at the UTG in basic nutrition.

As the name implies, the Education Students Association is the umbrella body of all students pursuing degrees at the School of Education, University of The Gambia.

The visit to NaNA is part of its broader ongoing effort to build lasting partnership and collaboration with key institutions in the country to effectively contribute towards nation-building. The would-be education leaders hope to work in tandem with NaNA to further causes related to nutrition matters.

Established by the Government of The Gambia, the National Nutrition Agency shoulders the responsibility of improving nutrition and nutrition-related health outcomes nationally. It combats malnutrition through robust policies, which necessitates a collaborative approach to involve other bodies – public or private.

Defined by evidence-based intervention that involves research initiatives, collaboration with the young scholars would be considered strategic, as they also discussed ways to refine existing policies to better support nutrition goals at the School of Education.

The need for initiatives to edify the school community on the importance of nutrition for enhanced awareness was also underscored, likewise the importance of establishing methods to track the effectiveness of nutrition programs within the school setting. Both sides assured their commitment for a continued partnership in this endeavour.
