The team of Gambian athletes in the recent Africa Youth Games, held in Angola, has secured three medals.
The sporting event was held in Luanda, the capital of Angola, from 10th to 20th December 2025. Marking the fourth edition, it drew young athletes from the 54 states across the continent. While the Gambian athletes failed to clutch gold, they acquired two bronze and one silver.
Their relatively successful performance in Luanda, capital of Angola, came on the heels of a firm clarion call by GNOC president Bai Do Jallow, who insisted athletes must fight to bring home medals and trophies from international competitions.
Following the event, Mr Jallow hailed the exceptional performance, recognising the number of medals secured, as the country’s hopes to do even better in subsequent competitions.
In a similar vein, following the competitions and a brilliant performance, the Gambian delegation to Luanda was hosted by Haji Jawara, the Gambian consul in Angola, for lunch and crucial brotherly talks. The occasion was witnessed by Gambians from across the capital, who converged at Jawara’s residence to celebrate the Gambian athletes’ success.
GNOC president Bai Dodou Jallow extended gratitude to the honorary consul for his support throughout their stay in Angola.
Consul Jawara, on the other hand, equally thanked Mr Jallow and the delegation for the good representation of The Gambia and congratulated them on the medals won. The consul reaffirmed his commitment to the affairs of Gambians in Angola, especially regarding their welfare. They also urged hard work among the young athletes.
Notably, the AYG is particularly important, as it serves as a warm-up for the Youth Olympic Games next year (2026), which would be hosted by Dakar, Senegal, marking the first time for such an event to be hosted in Africa.
