ANM Ousainu Darboe, leader of the United Democratic Party (UDP), has called on Gambians to embrace unity, tolerance, and peaceful coexistence.
In his annual Eid message, Darboe reminded citizens that the festival is not only a commemoration of Prophet Ibrahim’s devotion and sacrifice but also a moment for reconciliation and compassion. He urged Gambians to rise above political and social divisions, stressing that “our strength as a nation lies in our ability to live together in peace despite our differences.”
Darboe emphasised that tolerance must remain at the heart of Gambian society, encouraging respect for diverse opinions, faiths, and ethnic backgrounds. He noted that Eid ul Adha’s traditions of sacrifice, charity, and community bonding should inspire citizens to extend generosity to the less fortunate and strengthen ties across communities.
“As we share the blessings of Eid, let us also share kindness, forgiveness, and solidarity,” Darboe said, adding that the values of patience and obedience to Allah should guide Gambians in their daily lives.
The UDP leader’s message comes at a time when The Gambia continues to consolidate its democratic journey. His appeal for unity resonates strongly in a nation striving to heal divisions and build a future rooted in peace and mutual respect.
Eid ul Adha, which fell on May 27 this year, was celebrated across the country with prayers, animal sacrifices, and charitable acts, reinforcing the spirit of togetherness that Darboe highlighted in his address.
