Heavy rainfall on Wednesday left parts of Banjul submerged, with floodwaters overwhelming several streets in the Gambian capital.
Videos shared by Mayor Rohey Malick Lowe on her official social media page showed large volumes of water covering Perseverance Street, making movement difficult and underscoring the city’s recurring flooding challenges during the rainy season.
In her post, Mayor Lowe renewed her appeal for greater investment in the capital, writing: “Perseverance Street right now! This is exactly what I meant when I say ‘Justice for Banjul.’”
The flooding highlights the vulnerability of Banjul’s infrastructure to seasonal downpours, a problem that has long plagued residents. Calls for improved drainage and climate-resilient urban planning have grown louder in recent years, as the city continues to grapple with the impact of heavy rains.
