“Enough is Enough”: UTG Students Press on with Demonstration Despite Government Assurances

Students of the University of The Gambia (UTG) on Monday continued their protest at the Kanifing Campus, maintaining pressure on authorities to urgently address what they describe as worsening conditions at the institution’s Faraba Campus.

The demonstration follows growing frustration among students over persistent shortages of food and water, inadequate transportation services, and unreliable internet connectivity, problems they say have severely disrupted academic life.

Student leaders reported that some students endure long hours without proper meals, while others struggle to attend lectures due to transportation difficulties between campuses.

The situation, they argue, has reached a critical stage, with a number of students allegedly missing lectures and even examinations because commitments aimed at resolving the crisis, protesters remained unmoved, insisting that similar concerns had been raised repeatedly without producing tangible results.

Authorities are said to have pledged to restore catering services, improve access to water and internet facilities, and deploy 20 buses to ease transportation constraints faced by students.

However, demonstrators maintained that promises alone will not solve the problems confronting students, noting that weeks of complaints and appeals have yielded little meaningful action.

The continued protest highlights growing concern among the student body over living and learning conditions at the Faraba Campus, with protesters calling for swift implementation of the proposed measures rather than further assurances
