The Kanifing Municipal Council (KMC) has commissioned a D4.1 million Fish Sellers Centre in Serrekunda market, a project hailed as a major boost to the local economy and the livelihoods of fish vendors.
The new facility, spanning 335 square metres, houses 24 fish-selling tables and accommodates 124 vendors. By formalizing the fish trade in a modern, hygienic environment, the centre is expected to increase vendor productivity, reduce post-harvest losses, and attract more customers through improved sanitary conditions.
Talib Ahmed Bensouda, Mayor of Kanifing Municipality emphasised that the investment will generate significant ripple effects across the community. With four soakaways and eight water taps installed, vendors can maintain cleaner operations, enhance consumer confidence and drive higher sales volumes.
He noted the Centre also reduces congestion in the market, allowing for smoother transactions and better working conditions.
Market women expressed optimism that the improved infrastructure will stabilize incomes and create opportunities for younger traders entering the sector. Economists note that such investments in market facilities not only strengthen livelihoods but also contribute to food security, job creation, and sustainable urban growth.
The Fish Sellers Centre is expected to serve as a model for future market development projects, reinforcing KMC’s role in empowering small-scale entrepreneurs and driving inclusive economic development.
