Two weeks after its official opening by Kanifing Municipal Council Mayor Talib Ahmed Bensouda on 5 August 2026, the newly constructed Serrekunda Fish Market has yet to commence operations.
During a visit to the facility yesterday, our team observed that fish vendors had not started trading from the market. Women vendors currently selling fish along the highway expressed optimism about the project, describing it as a major relief after years of working under harsh weather conditions, poor sanitation, and limited facilities.
The vendors said they had expected to move into the new market shortly after its inauguration but are still waiting for the Kanifing Municipal Council to begin the allocation process.
Market Manager Modou Njie explained that additional works recommended by the mayor during his inspection on the day of the inauguration must first be completed.
“During the inspection, the mayor recommended that the areas where the taps are should be tiled and the drains should also be opened and cleaned,” Njie said.
According to him, the outstanding works are expected to begin this week and be completed within 15 days. Allocation of spaces to vendors will commence once the works are finalized.
