The Gambia government and the World Bank Group have reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening development cooperation, as both sides reviewed a portfolio worth approximately US$624 million during a Joint Country Portfolio and Performance Review (CPPR) at the OIC Conference Centre in Bijilo.
A Portfolio Under Pressure: The CPPR is more than a routine check-in; it is a critical exercise aimed at ensuring that projects financed under the World Bank partnership deliver real impact. With a portfolio spanning human capital, agriculture, infrastructure, digital connectivity, tourism, energy, and climate resilience, the stakes are high.
Officials acknowledged that while funding commitments are substantial, challenges such as bureaucratic delays, capacity gaps, and implementation bottlenecks have slowed progress. The review sought to identify these obstacles and chart a path toward faster, more efficient delivery.
Government’s Perspective: Finance and Economic Affairs Minister Seedy K.M. Keita described the World Bank as “an important development partner,” emphasizing that beyond financial resources, the institution provides technical expertise and institutional support that are vital for The Gambia’s growth. He stressed that accelerating project implementation is essential to ensure citizens see tangible benefits in areas like job creation, education, and infrastructure.
World Bank’s Role: The World Bank’s involvement in The Gambia reflects its broader mission of supporting low-income countries to achieve sustainable development. By investing in climate resilience and energy, the Bank is helping the country prepare for global shocks, while projects in human capital and digital connectivity aim to position The Gambia for long-term competitiveness.
Looking Ahead: The CPPR concluded with a renewed commitment to improve coordination between government agencies and the World Bank, streamline processes, and strengthen accountability. For many Gambians, the hope is that these measures will translate into visible improvements in everyday life from better roads and schools to expanded access to electricity and internet services.
As The Gambia navigates its development journey, the $624 million portfolio represents both an opportunity and a responsibility: an opportunity to transform lives, and a responsibility to ensure that every dollar invested yields meaningful results.
