His Excellency Adama Barrow today received a delegation of Islamic leaders, including members of the Supreme Islamic Council, regional Imams, and other prominent religious figures from the West Coast Region, Kanifing Municipality, and Banjul, during a courtesy visit to the State House.
This high‑level gathering, the first of its kind since 1981, was aimed at fostering peace, tranquility, and unity among Islamic leaders while charting pathways for national peace and progress.
In his remarks, President Barrow commended the delegation for their unity and dedication, noting that their role in promoting peace and moral guidance is vital to the nation’s progress. He reaffirmed his government’s commitment to maintaining peace and stability, emphasising that collaboration with religious leaders remains central to building a harmonious and prosperous Gambia.
Several Imams and representatives of various religious groups, including the President of the Supreme Islamic Council, Sheikh Essa Darboe underscored the moral and spiritual responsibility of religious leaders in safeguarding peace, particularly during this electoral period.
Hon. Hamat Bah, Minister of Lands, Regional Government and Religious Affairs, urged Imams to continue praying for peace and tranquility in The Gambia, assuring them of the government’s readiness to work closely with religious leaders to ensure peaceful coexistence.
Imam of Latrikunda, Basiru Drammeh chaired the meeting and Alhajie Bai Secka, Bilal of Banjul gave the vote of thanks. Attendees included representatives from the Gambia Supreme Islamic Council, RAWDA, Ahmadiya Jamaat and other groups all focused renewed commitment to sustain peaceful coexistence in the country.
