Team Gambia Grand Coalition 2026 has pledged to deliver a new constitution within 18 months if elected, and to choose its presidential candidate through nationwide consultations.
The coalition, formally established Sept. 12 after months of talks, unveiled its agenda at a Monday press conference in a local hotel.
Veteran politician Sidia Jatta said the group should be seen as a “team” rather than another electoral alliance, comparing its approach to Barcelona’s “tiki-taka” style — every player working toward a common goal.
Halifa Sallah, speaking on the coalition’s behalf, said its central aim was to “hand Gambia back to her people” after 61 years of poor governance. The coalition comprises five political parties (with a sixth in consultations), eight political movements, two independent presidential aspirants, four civil society organizations, and eight prominent Gambians.
Sallah criticized the current constitution for lacking presidential term limits and allowing a president to win without an absolute majority. Team Gambia would push for term limits and a 50-percent-plus threshold, and deliver a “Constitution of the Third Republic” within 18 months.
The coalition also plans to eradicate extreme poverty within a five-year mandate by expanding access to housing, food, infrastructure, and healthcare. It will extend its single-candidate model to National Assembly and local government elections.
Who will lead the coalition remains unresolved. Sallah said aspirants would form a forum and consult nationwide before a flag bearer is chosen.
