Gambia’s Hon. Mbow elected Chair of Africa Internet Governance Forum

Hon. Alhagie Mbow, a Member of the National Assembly from Upper Saloum and the head of the Gambian delegation to the Pan-African Parliament, has been chosen as the Chair of the Africa Internet Governance Forum (AfIGF) Multistakeholder Advisory Group (MAG).

This new leadership team will oversee important discussions and initiatives related to internet governance across Africa.

Joining Hon. Mbow in this leadership role is Winnie Kamau, a respected data journalist and President of the Association of Freelance Journalists in Kenya, who will serve as Vice Chair.

After his election, Hon. Mbow expressed his appreciation, stating: “It is an honour to be nominated alongside other highly qualified individuals to lead the Africa Multistakeholder Advisory Group on Internet Governance. I am grateful to everyone who supported my nomination and have placed their trust in me for this significant responsibility.”

Moreover, the Africa IGF MAG includes representatives from various groups, such as government officials, civil society, educational institutions, technical experts, businesses, and regional organizations like the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa and the African Union.

Additionally, the group aims to promote cooperation in the digital space, support inclusive discussions about internet policies, and address important issues and opportunities in internet governance throughout the continent.

Also, with its new leadership, the MAG is set to play a crucial role in shaping Africa’s digital future, advocating for internet governance that is open, inclusive, and secure for everyone involved.
