Gambia army chief enforces strict measures against reckless driving, social media misconduct

In a bid to reinforce discipline and accountability, General Sait Njie, Commander of the Gambia Armed Forces (GAF), has launched a stringent crackdown on soldiers involved in reckless driving and partisan social media activities.

The announcement was made during his nationwide tour of military camps on Monday, May 13, 2025, underscoring a zero-tolerance policy towards actions that jeopardize public safety, military cohesion, and national trust.

General Njie highlighted the rising incidents of accidents and damage to state property caused by military personnel. “Reckless driving will no longer be tolerated. Any soldier found guilty will face charges for damages,” he declared.

The commander also addressed soldiers’ engagement in divisive online behaviour, warning that personnel involved in partisan social media conflicts risk dismissal.

“The GAF serves the nation impartially. Soldiers must uphold democratic values, protect citizens and avoid political entanglements,” Njie stated.

Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) Lieutenant General Mamat O.A. Cham reinforced this stance, stating that both drivers and their supervising officers would be held jointly accountable for reparations.

“These accidents waste resources and cost lives. Accountability is non-negotiable,” CDS Cham emphasised.

He also stresses the military’s apolitical role: “We obey lawful orders, reject illegal directives, and safeguard elected governments. Our loyalty is to the Gambian people, not political factions.”

Responding to rumours about foreign military influence, CDS Cham clarified that the ECOWAS Military Intervention in Gambia (ECOMIG) plays only a supportive role at State House.  “Our State Guard is 80% Gambian-led, with ECOMIG providing auxiliary assistance. Claims of foreign control are false,” he asserted. He further noted that collaboration with ECOWAS strengthens regional security, citing Gambia’s contributions to peacekeeping missions in Sudan and Sierra Leone.

The defence chiefs urged soldiers to disregard divisive narratives, reaffirming GAF’s commitment to sovereignty and civilian democracy.  “We are proud partners in regional stability, not subordinates. Our focus remains on accountability, peace, and the protection of Gambian lives,” CDS Cham concluded.
