Beakanyang launches Green Energy Project in Nyakoi Taibatou

In a major boost to grassroots climate action, Beakanyang on May 29, 2025, launched a renewable energy and energy-efficient cooking stoves project in Nyakoi Taibatou, Wuli West District, Upper River Region.

The initiative, supported by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), also marked the laying of a foundation stone for the construction of a modern, solar-powered welding center in the community.

Speaking at the official launch, Beakanyang Executive Director, Nfamara Jawneh, expressed gratitude to UNDP for backing the project, which he said aims to empower local artisans and combat climate change at the community level.

“The project will provide training for local welders and potters on the production of improved cooking stoves,” Mr Jawneh said. “It will also generate employment opportunities for young people and support the development of a sustainable stove production business in this area,” he added.

The Alkalo of Taibatou, Alhagie Bemba Jabby, commended Beakanyang for the timely initiative, emphasizing the urgency of local responses to climate change and its impacts on rural communities.

Also speaking at the event, Muhammad Ceesay of the Regional Forestry Office highlighted the environmental and economic benefits of renewable energy solutions. He called on women in the community to embrace improved stoves to reduce emissions and support cleaner energy alternatives.

Mrs Dusu Jatta, speaking on behalf of the women of Taibatou, applauded Beakanyang for initiating an inclusive and impactful project that addresses both environmental and social needs.

Beneficiary Abubacarr Jawneh also expressed appreciation on behalf of community members, describing the project as “life-changing” and a pathway to a more sustainable future.

The ceremony was also graced by representatives from the NGO Affairs Agency and the District Youth Committee of Wuli West, who all commended the initiative and reaffirmed their commitment to supporting youth and climate resilience in the region.
